While developing his arguments on the loss of certainties in mathematics, Morris Kline (1980) outlines how historically it is possible to conceive of three complementary kinds of mathematical activities undertaken by mathematicians of varied and ancient civilizations, as well as in the work of contemporary mathematicians. In this paper, these three kinds of mathematical activities are outlined and thought through, in order to understand what they mean for mathematics in general and for mathematics in schools.
